All Afghanistan team members resign from Netherlands tour

It appears that the players who appeared in the squad to tour the Netherlands have quit this particular tour in protest at the team selection.

Raees Ahmadzai, the recentley retired player (although he now wants to play 50-over cricket), said this on his Facebook page: “all team resgine from Holland tour bcz of some problems.NowrozMangal, mohnabi, hameed, karim, asgher, shahzad, mirwais, shapoor, noor ali, shabir noori, ans some young players.”

The main reason for this mass resignation seems to be down to the lack of professionalism in the board. They feel that the chief executive of the ACB, Aimal Shinwari, lacks cricketing knowledge. Also, the captain Nowroz Mangal is upset that he wasn’t involved in picking the team for the Netherlands tour. Basically, the players are at loggerheads with the board.

This act of quitting the team isn’t unusual in the Afghanistan team. Last year, the opening batsman Karim Sadiq briefly resigned when his brother, Hasti Gul, was not selected.

The response to the players quitting has been mixed from the Afghan fans. I believe, though, that this is an unnecessary step from the players. This is also the kind of over-the-top action the Pakistan team would display. Pakistan are often laughed at among other international supporters. We don’t want people to start laughing at the Afghan team, do we?

  1. I can see where Raees is coming from. It seems the board is being too authoritarian and not involving the captain or the coach, which from international to local league cricket like I play is key. The coach and the captain must be involved in selection.

I don’t know how the board is structured. The ECB here in England is governed by representatives of the 38 first-class and minor counties and the MCC. It is headed by the Management Board (with 15 members), a First-Class Forum (for first-class cricket) and a Recreational Forum. The ECB’s has a chairman from a county and a chief executive.

It’s a structure that works here, all that is needed is for ethnic and provincial loyalties to be removed from national selection decision making and things will run more efficiently and importantly be representative to the players.

I would have Raees top of my board anyday, he seems a good man with the future of the sport in his mind.

  2. I think Afghans player needs years and years to learn how to listen and keep the national interest at the top of personnel interest. I do not think it is the issue of good player or poor player selection, but it is the family, tribe, and area related problem. Everyone wants himself or relatives to be in the national team and flight all over the world. If this is true then I do not think afghan team will survive longer. Hope I am wrong. Thanks

  3. Hi
From this website and page I am strongly admitting myself to serve our national cricket team regarding sport injury. I am a physiotherapist and currently working in Canada as an active registered physiotherapist, and would like to manage and treat all players when they have physical injury. I have almost 10 years experience in sport injury and almost 16 years experience in physiotherapy. Hope the owner of this website will pass my request to the relative management. Thanks

      Hi B.Rafy,

Please pass the request directly to somebody like Raees Ahmadzai either on his twitter account, facebook or on his email. It would be unethical for me as the owner to give out any personal details like email addresses. The best option is to contact on twitter or facebook directly in case you want to convey the same.

  4. I am agree with B.Rafy,
It looks like that is the only issue and every and each trib want their own tribals to play in the National Team and travel around the world.
Everyday I go to work and pass the Afghanistan Cricket Board office and see alot of tribal elders, PMs etc behind door and waiting to get in.
We were witnessed in the current tournament match between Khost and xxx that Khost players, fans protested that they have the high net run rate to play in next round, even the PMs, ministers came in and backed their province.
They are making sport political and that destroy Afghan Cricket soon.
I hope they hire some forign cricketers who have experience in Cricket and make Cricket seperate from politics, tribal etc…

    Regards

  5. Thanks in advance for your comment. I would like to have my input regarding the selection of the players to the national team.
First it is a sport and game playing for the country and it is not the fun to go and spend your time and destroy the dream of your nation. The example of selecting the poor player and not in international slandered is like giving a medical certificate for someone knowing nothing about medicine and let treat people. Keeping this in mind I do not think any wise person will allow and agree to pick any physically and mentally poor and unfit player in the national or local team.
2ndly we have to keep politics away from the sport, if not it is going to destroy the future. I am pretty sure; we have a good talent in our lovely country, but need more experience and time to get to the international standard. We got enough from our stupid politics, they destroy our country and enough is enough let’s give a chance to people they fit the job, but not the job fit the person. It is not going to work nowadays. We are so behind and the train is already passed. We are just running behind it, hoping we will get it one day.
3ridly, there has to be a committee composed of experienced players in the same field, a couch, and physical trainer, a psychologist, a good doctor and finally a good manager to analyze the behavior, personality, physical talent and fitness, and attitude of the players before selection. At the same time goal and purpose of going to play cricket is important. If the players like to become a cricket player and he spend time and have a good dream the committee has to pick him after following him for few years in the local teams.
I will continue talking about these points in the next text. Thanks for all.

  6. I guess some players in the Afghan cricket team fancy monopolizing the whole selection process. I believe there are some players in the current team that should not have been part of the team. I have seen a couple of players, who are much better than some of the players in the team; for example, Batin Shan. In my opinion, in order to root out grouping in the team once and for all, the Afghan Cricket Board should deal with this matter severely. If the Afghan Cricket Board capitulated to the pressure from the players, the damage for cricket in Afghanistan would immense.

For my part, I really appreciate the efforts of Mr. Aimal Shinwari. I was invariably advocating for a well-structured domestic cricket. We have seen for the first time that a well-structured domestic cricket has been put in place. We are witness that Afghan cricket has been dominated by infighting among the Afghan Cricket Federation, which has recently been changed to Afghan Cricket Board. This uprising against the current Cricket Board Officials may have been instigated by some of the ex-boar members.

  8. Salaam, I dont think its wise for an Afghanistan Cricket website to make insolent comments against Pakistan. Yes,I agree Pakistan is not perfect but then which board is. It’s advisable to recognise the positive contributions that Pakistan has added to Cricket as oppose to negative gestues, just to mention a few as your cricket knowledge is apparantly very shallow. Pkaistan hs created some of the finest cricketers of all time ie Haneef Mohammed, Javed Miandad, Legendary Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Inzamam ul Haq, Shahid Afridi an so on….. Pakistan has superb stadiums which hosted the world cup twice and Crowned world champs twice, what a achievemment and long may it reign. All the best to the Afghan cricket team.

    @Liaqut Khan

No offense but the moment I read Afridi being mentioned as one of the finest cricketers of all time I could not stop laughing. If Afridi is one of the finest cricketers ever in world cricket then maybe every second cricketer in the world is a Don Bradman or a Sachin Tendulkar. The most mediocre player ever is mentioned as one of the finest cricketers of all time. That itself gives an idea of the DEPTH of your cricketing knowledge.

Regarding this website, this is not the official Afghanistan cricket website but it is a website which I created so that Afghanistan cricket fans from all over the world can contribute and dissipate knowledge about the Afghanistan cricket team. And the author of the above post shortthirdman is one of the most respected authors and editors in the website. BTW I am an Indian ;) and not an Afghan but I have great respect for the Afghanistan cricket and wish for its development as all the writers here.

And shortthirdman did not make insolent comments and it was quite evident. Pakistan was just cited as an example by STM and it is a well known truth and there is nothing negative about it. Kindly do not make any comments on any of our author’s cricketing knowledge in the future as it is not desirable.

    1. Aimal, the players aren’t happy about some of the people in the Afghanistan cricket board. But they have made a compromise- they are not going on strike. Look on the home page; there you will see Afghanistan team strike averted.
